Avignon – A City Of Medieval Wonders

Avignon is one of the most charming cities in France, which is situated on the shores of the Rhone River. My visit to this historic city was an unforgettable experience. There are many ancient streets, Gothic structures, religious monuments, and medieval ramparts that leave us speechless. The place is known for its cultural activities like street performances, dance, and theatre. To relish the cultural excellence of the city you should visit during the annual arts festival, popularly known as the Festival d’Avignon.

  • Palais Des Papes

Palais des Papes or the Palace of the Popes is a famous tourist attraction in France that attracts millions of visitors to the city of Avignon. The castle was built in the 13th century and since then it has been home to several Popes.  It was selected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995. The huge Gothic castle can take you back in time. My brief visit to the Palace of Popes was quite enlightening and the audio-visual guiding tool made the tour all the more realistic.

  • Jardin Des Doms

After visiting several historic sites, my trip to the enchanting park of Jardin des Doms was quite refreshing.  The public garden is one of the best parks in the city that attracts thousands of visitors. The place is located on a hilltop and has a beautiful pond surrounded by lush green foliage. The views from the top of the hill are extremely beautiful.  You must definitely visit the place if you happen to be in Avignon.

  • Eglise Saint Pierre

This beautiful medieval church is the most visited religious attractions in Avignon.  Although there are many cathedrals in the city, Eglise Saint Pierre is quite exceptional.  The church illustrates Gothic architecture at its best. The interiors are extensively designed with ornate carvings and sculptures.  One of the notable features of the place is its wonderfully carved doors.
